Now We Play

Mental Fitness for Everyday Life

By Sutton Burke, MS, LCPC

What if the goal was never to fix yourself?

For nearly two decades, Sutton Burke has helped people navigate the complicated, uncomfortable parts of life. Then she found herself confronting a question of her own: knowing what makes a meaningful life isn’t the same as actually living it.

A book you don’t just read. You practice.

What is mental fitness?

Mental fitness is the daily practice of building emotional and psychological capacity, much like physical fitness builds physical capacity. It’s not about peak performance. It’s about building the capacity to be present for the full range of your actual life, and to meet those moments with greater awareness, steadiness, and choice. Something we practice on ordinary days, before life asks us to use it.

The Now We Play framework

Connect up. Connect in. Connect now.

Three connections. One daily practice.

Connect Up

To G-d, meaning, spirituality, gratitude, awe, and something greater than yourself.

Connect In

To yourself: your body, mind, and emotions. Notice what is here. Allow it to be there. Listen for what you need.

Connect Now

To the present moment, your people, your purpose, joy, play, and the life that is actually happening right now.

The seven pillars

Seven interconnected areas of life.

01

Body

The body you are living in.

02

Soul

G-d, meaning, spirituality, gratitude, and awe.

03

Roots

What shaped you and what you choose to carry forward.

04

My People

Friendship, community, belonging, and support.

05

Beloved

Loving ourselves and others: intimacy, vulnerability, conflict, and repair.

06

Contribution

Purpose, work, service, and what we give.

07

Inner Life

Thoughts, feelings, fear, shame, identity, and the stories we carry.

In her words

Why I wrote Now We Play

For years, I had access to the language, research, and tools of mental health. I was teaching many of them to other people. I was also living a real life.

I began to understand that knowing about presence wasn’t the same as being present. Knowing how emotions work wasn’t the same as allowing myself to feel them. Knowing that relationships matter wasn’t the same as slowing down enough to really experience them.

I didn’t want to write another book about eliminating anxiety, perfectly regulating ourselves, or becoming some optimized version of a human being.

I wanted to write about the practice of being human. Building more capacity for what is difficult, while also becoming more available for what is already good: connection, meaning, love, awe, joy, presence, and play.

That became Now We Play.

From insight to practice

Practice what you need, where you are.

Now We Play is not asking you to master seven areas of your life. It helps you notice where you are, understand what you need, and practice something small enough to actually do.

When your mind is spiraling

Notice what is happening before automatically believing every thought.

When an emotion gets big

Notice it. Allow it to be there. Make room for the feeling before deciding what to do next.

When your body needs care

Listen to it and respond to it as something to work with, not something to fight.

When a relationship feels strained

Get curious. Communicate. Set the boundary. Make the repair.

When you have lost perspective

Connect Up to meaning, spirituality, gratitude, awe, or something larger than the moment you are in.

When life becomes all responsibility

Make room for presence, joy, play, connection, and what is good right now.

When you know what matters but aren’t living it

Choose one thing you can practice today.
